Blog by Polly Harrison, General Insurance Consultant. Polly is not only an avid traveller but also Provident’s travel insurance expert.

Planning a holiday is often as enjoyable as the holiday itself, however too many people miss a key part of that planning - travel insurance.

Travel insurance is often a small percentage of most people’s holiday costs however when illnesses, accidents or cancellations happened, they can quickly become expensive events if there is no insurance cover and can also cause a lot of unnecessary stress.

It takes only a short phone call to us, or your travel agent, to organise insurance, but it is important to explain your plans and activities so that you have the right cover in place for your holiday.

Travel Alerts and Bali’s volcano exclusion

Many Western Australians plan to holiday in Bali over winter, myself included, however it is important to be aware that many policies still have an exclusion in place for claims arising as a result of Mount Agung, Indonesia, as this is no longer deemed to be an unforeseen event.

Always check with your insurance consultant or travel insurer to see if there are any particular alerts in place that you may need to be aware of that could impact your travel plans.

Activities

Travel Insurance policies cover a range of activities whilst you are travelling such as snorkelling, white water rafting, horse riding etc., but if you are getting a little more adventurous it is a good idea to check with your insurer to make sure particular activities are in fact covered.

Adventure activities such as snow sports, scuba diving, outdoor rock climbing, parachuting and skydiving may require additional cover so please contact us to have a chat to make sure you have the right cover in place for your trip.

Moped/ Motorcycle

Did you know that motorcycle/ moped riding cover isn’t only if you are the driver - travel insurance policies can also cover you if you are pillion passenger?

This form of transport is becoming more and more popular so it is always key to check your travel insurance policy to make sure you have the right cover for you.

Annual Multi-Trip cover

If you are likely to take several holidays throughout the year or if you are recently retired and have an array of long awaited trips in mind, an annual multi-trip policy may be the most cost-effective cover for you.

Once you have selected the maximum trip duration for any one trip, usually 30/ 45/ 60 days, this policy will allow you to travel as often as you like within the 12 month period.

When is the best time to take out travel insurance?

I can’t count the amount of times I have had clients contacting me on the day of departure as typically travel insurance is forgotten about until the last moment – there is always that mild sense of panic that it hasn’t already been organised!

Ultimately the best advice I can give is … get insurance at the same time your purchase your tickets!

Most insurance policies will cover for unforeseen cancellations such as illnesses and natural disasters, so if the worse case happens you don’t lose the cost of your holiday. If you are planning a winter holiday, call me on 08 9442 0000 to get a quote on travel insurance.
