Be sure, you insure and travel safe

Travel insurance is important regardless of the number of times you travel and not all policies are the same. Unfortunately, it's not until something goes wrong that you really know the value of quality travel insurance. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade assists approximately 20,000 Australians a year, 700 hospital admissions, 600 deaths and 100 evacuation due to medical circumstances.

Travel insurance covers a variety of insurable events such as flight cancellations, medical expenses, baggage theft or damage depending on the type of cover that you opt for. However, it is important to obtain a cover that suits your individual circumstances as well as your travel plans, taking into consideration your age, the destination, your stay duration, pre-existing medical conditions, what belongings you are taking and activities you are likely to do.

Our insurance team have come up with a few tips to help you choose the right type of travel insurance and to be prepared if you need to put in a claim.

  • Understand what your travel insurance covers, read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), be aware of the level of excess and where it applies.
  • Identify the issues and circumstances which your policy does not cover you.
  • Declare any pre-existing medical conditions you may have.
  • Check the level of cover for luggage and personal belongings against your valuable items, if you need to upgrade your cover, do so.
  • Take photographs of expensive items that you are taking with you such as jewellery or electronic items.
  • Scan the relevant pages of your passport.
  • Email these images and your insurance policy number to a location you can easily access while on holidays, i.e. a webmail address or online vault site.
  • If you buy an expensive item on your holiday take a photograph and keep the receipt
  • If you happen to be a victim of crime while on holiday make sure you obtain a police report. This simple step is often missed, generally Police have a standard form they fill out for insurance claim and it is not a difficult process.
  • Carry your travel insurance policy number with you.
  • If you make a claim keep a copy of all the documentation.
